EXTERNAL CYLINDRICAL GRINDING

Sanding refers to mechanical or manual processes to change the appearance of materials. Not only metals are subjected to such processing, but also products made of wood, glass, granite, diamond, and any other hard and not too materials.

It is worth noting that grinding is a subspecies of abrasive processing, which is considered a subspecies of cutting. Therefore, it can be said that in the process of grinding, as well as in the process of cutting, a certain layer (chips) is removed from the surface of the product, due to which the product receives its final form.

Mechanical grinding is most often used to bring hard and brittle objects to certain parameters, the accuracy in this process is microns. Also, this process is used so that the product receives the smallest roughness, which is allowed by GOST. And an important aspect is that cutting fluids (coolants) are used for cooling.

General introduction to grinding

In the most elementary cases, hard particles of granular sand or hard emery are used. Some selected materials are poured onto a solid surface, and the process of friction against the created surface by the workpiece is carried out directly. During this process, the grains with corners, rolling between two surfaces, hit the uneven surfaces of the treated surfaces many times, which crumble and turn into grinding grains themselves.

When working with different types of surfaces, for example, with softer ones, the grains will not roll, they will be fixed on the surface and will be motionless even when the friction of the second surface begins. As a result, rows of parallel scratches will be obtained.

Using the first method of grinding in the work, a matte surface will be obtained. In case of using the second method, the surface will be shiny, since thanks to the fixed particles, scratches that are barely visible to the human eye are created, giving the product shine.

For example, when processing two plates made of copper, each will rub against the other with emery. As a result, each of them will become matte. But if the emery is glued to the paper surface, then the final result will be a shiny surface.

An important aspect of grinding is that brittle and hard glasses are subject to more abrasion when compared to soft and ductile metals. The diamond powder can be used to cut diamonds, but a sandstone sharpener can cut pieces of quartz.

When processing, do not forget that, to obtain suitable pits, it is necessary to use a suitable emery. If the product must have large pits, then emery with large grains should be used for these purposes, for small pits – emery with fine grains.

Today, special machines are used to obtain a perfectly polished product faster and with higher quality. And one of the varieties of machine grinding is circular external grinding. This type of grinding is used for machining cylindrical and conical surfaces of shafts.

Such grinding lends itself to parts with a diameter of 3-30 mm and a length of up to 400 mm. We can easily perform grinding of different types of metals (ferrous and non-ferrous), and we also work with alloys (stainless and titanium).
